WhatsApp’s ban adds 1.5 mln users to Russia’s Telegram
MEXICO CITY, Dec 18 (PRIME) -- Suspension of mobile application WhatsApp in Brazil has boosted the number of users of messenger Telegram, created by Pavel Durov, a founder of Russian social network VKontakte, by 1.5 million people, PRIME reported late Thursday.
“Hang on, your codes are coming! We’ve got all hands on deck to accommodate the crazy load,” Telegram said in its Twitter account.
The decision to block WhatsApp came in force on Thursday for 48 hours, but was later cancelled. Access to the resource was limited due to a criminal investigation, whose details were not disclosed.
As of May, Telegram, a cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging application with a focus on security and speed, had 62 million subscribers.
